MEAGAN BOYD: Through my art, I explore the transcendental realm between dreams and waking life in the context of myth and magic. The work often depicts utopian environments filled with modern day nymphs, spiritual deities, holy beings, and party monsters, relishing the interconnectivity between all animals, humans, and nature.

My work is informed by many things, but the divine feminine is a huge source of inspiration. I am a feminist and have always been interested in exploring ancient feminine symbols and I am interested in retelling mythical narratives in a way that empowers and connects me to other women.

The most relevant experiences I’ve had that contribute to my inspiration as an artist are moments of transcendence that can most easily be described as “spiritual.” Moments in which I feel less alone and isolated within myself — connected to nature, ancestors, and perhaps the mystical dream realm. I try to depict these feelings in a poetic vision, keeping these narratives primitive and raw to maintain their purity. I like to create in a childlike way and find it crucial to conjure joy in everything I make.

Meagan Boyd, b. 1987, lives and works in the dark paradise, often referred to as Los Angeles. Using an explosive color palate along with intricate line-work, her freakishly folkish style combines the nostalgic essence of the fauves juxtaposed with a neon-like urban glow. She attended California College of the Arts, San Francisco and Oakland, CA from August 2013-2014 and Chaffey College, Fine Arts in Rancho Cucamonga, CA from August 2005-December 2008. She has held several group and solo exhibitions.
