Something inside me has to click...
Steven Hartman began his exploration of collage over twenty-five years ago. He was first inspired by the illustrations in Golden Books and Dell comics and later by the art movements of Dadaism, Pop-Art and Surrealism, especially the works of Max Ernst and Joseph Cornell.
With the absence of the “digital age” when Hartman began his work, he utilized the classic cut-and-paste collage technique. Meticulously creating seamless collages, each piece can take him just minutes to several years as he patiently waits for just the right images to fit perfectly with a piece. “Something inside me has to click for me to know it has arrived.” He recently began a collaboration with a digital photographer, which has given him the opportunity to utilize modern technology to enhance his paper collages for print and sale.
He has a Solo Exhibition opening in April at Bright Hill’s Word & Image Gallery in Treadwell, NY.
